Painting a Vintage Lenci Doll

Painting a Vintage Lenci Doll

I painted this small oil portrait of a vintage Lenci doll as a birthday gift, so I wanted it to be something special. The painting is a portrait of a vintage Lenci doll, capturing its distinctive expression and characte.

Lenci dolls were first produced in Turin, Italy in the early 20th century by the company founded by Elena König Scavini. They are distinctive for their hand-crafted felt construction, with moulded faces, painted features, and carefully stitched clothing. Unlike porcelain dolls, they have a softness to them, both in material and expression, which gives them a very particular presence.

They became highly sought after not only as children’s toys, but also among adults, particularly fashionable women of the time. Lenci dolls were often kept as decorative objects..

The challenge was to keep it feeling distinctly “doll-like”, not softening or over-humanising the features, but holding onto that slightly stylised expression and character that Lenci dolls are known for.

What drew me to this one in particular was the expression – the slightly sideways glance combined with the bright yellow bow gave it a strong sense of personality. The softness of the felt and the subtle tonal shifts made it an interesting subject to translate into oil paint.

I really enjoy working on pieces like this – where the subject has a personal meaning and a strong sense of character.
