Painting Castlegregory and the Maharees: Original Irish Landscape Art Inspired by the Dingle Peninsula

Castlegregory and the Maharees have always been more than just places to visit—they are deeply intertwined with my family’s history and have become the heart of my artistic journey. Nestled along the stunning coastline of County Kerry, these landscapes have shaped not only my love for painting but also how I experience the world around me.

Finding My Voice in Plein Air

My journey with plein air painting really began here during a year I spent in Castlegregory  during the pandemic. With the world on pause, I had the chance to slow down, observe the world around me, and immerse myself in the shifting light and ever-changing beauty of the landscape. Painting outdoors, directly from life, opened up a whole new way of seeing and creating.

I would take my bike and ride along the winding roads, stopping whenever a scene caught my attention—whether it was the soft glow of evening light on the mountains, the expansive dunes of the Maharees, or the quiet charm of the village streets. The landscape here is constantly changing, and that’s what I love about it. The Maharees, in particular, is a place where the weather and the tides never stop surprising you. Some days, it’s calm and glassy, and other times, the waves crash with an incredible force against the rocks. No matter what the conditions, there’s always something new to capture.

PleinAir castlegregory From Outdoors to the Studio

Plein air painting became a real passion, but I also enjoy bringing those experiences back into my studio. Some scenes just need more time and layering, and the quiet space of the studio allows me to develop those moments further. My collection includes both plein air sketches and larger studio pieces, each capturing a different essence of Castlegregory —from the wild Atlantic coastline to the serene, everyday moments in the village.

Exhibitions and Sharing the Story

I’ve been lucky enough to exhibit my Castlegregory collection a couple of times, and each show has been such a rewarding experience. Being able to share my work with others who feel the same connection to this place has been amazing. My grandmother was from this area, and knowing that gives each painting a special, personal meaning for me—it feels like I’m continuing a family tradition.

Through my work, I aim to capture not just the beauty of these landscapes but also the emotions tied to them—the quiet peace of a sunrise by the sea, the rush of energy in a storm, or the nostalgia of a summer evening.

Originals and Prints

If you’ve visited Castlegregory or just feel drawn to the wild beauty of the area , I have  both original paintings and prints of my work. Whether you’re looking to take a piece of the landscape home or simply enjoy the feeling these scenes evoke, I hope my paintings connect with you as deeply as the landscape has connected with me.

Painting Castlegregory and the Maharees has truly changed my life. It’s deepened my love for nature, my family’s roots, and the simple joy of creating art. I can’t imagine a more inspiring place, and I look forward to continuing this journey—one brushstroke at a time.
